I’m trying. Really I am.

I want to be here more than I am.

I want to be geeky and share what brings me joy with everyone here more than I do.

I want to FUCKING write for the LOVE OF GOD, more than I do anymore.

But mostly,

I want to make friends with like-minds.

What you can expect from this journal:

Shenanigans and Hijinx.
Book Reviews (mostly queer lit)
Broken Promises to be here regularly.
Half-finished memes.
Seriously, I am the WORST!

Things I post about When I do Post:

Me being ridiculous about what I'm reading
Fandom Shenanigans
Writing Shenanigans

Fandoms:

The most reading and writing I have done historically is for:

Harry Potter--my forever fandom, though that has waned since the whole JKR being a giant piece of shit thing.

I sadly only get inspired to write once a year for [community profile] yuletide these days, or when I have big feelings about things like Heartstopper and The Green Creek series.

Hmmm… What else? My fic can be mostly found Here on AO3

Pronouns: She/her but I’m also considering “Whatever” as a pronoun too.

Which brings me to the Friending policy:

Feel free to friend me all you want. I’ll more than likely friend you back--especially if you throw a comment below introducing yourself. If you just want to read my public fandom related posts, that’s cool too, just let me know so that I don’t accidentally friend you and expose you to my brand of silly ridiculousness. Cool?

tjs_whatnot: (writing--quit my shitty job)
I was just going to drop a link to something I actually wrote and uploaded to AO3, but then I saw [personal profile] delphi's Six Sentence Sunday and remembered that was something I wanted to start doing (which will hopefully keep me writing). ❤️❤️

If anyone else is doing this, please link me yours. And, if your don't want to post your own, feel free to do it in the comments.  I'd love to read it.

So, first this, and then the other story. These 6 sentences is from a Green Creek story I've been plugging away on for a very long time. It's Mark/Gordo:

When it all got to be too much, when the multitudes of blues became too vivid and overpowering, he ran. When that didn't work, he drove. And when even that didn't stop the drowning feeling of ocean waves of blue crashing around him, he kept driving until he could breathe again, could see the familiar trees engulf him, the familiar scents inflame him. Dirt. And grass. And leaves. And smoke mixed with motor oil.

He could breathe again when he could breathe in those aromas.

This time though, this time the smell of other overpowered all else. Made his blood boil.

*sigh* I just love these two knuckleheads.

And speaking of people I love. Last week was long time friend [personal profile] kaalee's birthday. And I was asked on the Heartstopper Discord if I'd like to create something for her. And, of course I did. So, I wrote something that kinda of paid tribute to all the fandoms we've followed each other through Sherlock/ HP (but only slightly as I'm all not ready to write in that world, or ask others to read in it)/ and of course, Heartstopper ❤️❤️

HAPPY PRIDE!

I hope to come back some time in the near future and talk about things and stuff. But until then, here, have some book recs.

May 2025 )

So, what is everyone reading for Pride? So far, I'm just set to finish:
*When The Tides Held the Moon by Venessa Vida Kelley
*Even Though I Knew the End by C.I. Polk
*Less is Lost by Andrew Sean Greer
*Missing Page by Cat Sebastian
*A Destiny of Dragons by TJ Klune

And then we'll see where the muse takes me. Recs, of course, always welcome. ❤️❤️

I put off doing this meme for a few reasons, the first being that I thought it looked like a thing that would be hard to gather. But [personal profile] corvidology  assured me it wasn't, and I trust them. ❤️ The second was because I knew that a lot of it would be HP, and as I've discussed before, I have complicated thoughts of my output in that fandom. But, I am proud of a lot of the works I produced, and feel like most (if not all) of them have always been a Fuck You to Rowling, so… here goes.

Sort of interesting…ish )

Any key takeaways? Just that I need to write more, and tag better. ❤️❤️

According to Fable, at this speed, I will reach my 2025 reading goal by August. 😍😍

Oh, and hey, let's follow each other on Fable! (That link will give us both 5$ to spend on books through their stores and I'll love you forever. ❤️)

And before I begin, this is where I beg you to join Fable (and give you a cool invite code that gives us both $$ for one of their interactive ebooks). Fable is AWESOME! ❤️

Challenge #12 Create a Rec Countdown

I know I'm obscenely late and who needs recs anyway? Oh, but wait, maybe now is the perfect time to rec, after the season is over when you're done reading all the stories your had bookmarked to read, after you've checked out all the communities/ discords/ books that everyone has already suggested. Here I come out of the kindness of my woefully procrastinatey heart with a post just for you. YAY ME!

Buckle up, this is going to be long! I can't believe how much I read in the shortest month of the year. I don't even know how it happened besides joining book clubs and following interesting people who recommend interesting books both here, and on Fable. (if you join through that link-- and everyone should be on Fable! It's awesome-- both you and I will get a 5$ credit for one of their interactive ebooks).❤️

I guess it also helped that it was SOOOOOO fuckin’ cold there wasn't anything else to do. 😍😍

February 2025 ) So, that was my February. How about you?

 1. Did the house where you grew up have a newspaper delivered regularly?
Growing up, I was a paper-boy. And yes, I was called that even back then. Hmmmm, I wonder how my complicated understanding of my own gender happened.

I remember my dad reading the paper whenever he was home, but I think that was just a perk of delivering them.
2. Have you ever subscribed to an actual print newspaper?
A family I lived with in Connecticut got the local paper and the New York Times delivered and the dad read them every night at dinner.
3. When was the most recent time you physically picked up and read a newspaper?
I honestly can't remember. Oh yeah, I remember, in a coffee shop in Auckland while I was visiting there last summer.
4. Do you pay for news online now?
Nope.
5. Do you have any saved newspaper clippings?
I used to be a freelance journalist for the Arts and Entertainment section of our local paper (the one that the dad read every night during dinner on question 2's answer) and I have clippings of all those articles. And ones I wrote for my highschool newspaper.

There was a long part of my life where I wanted to be a journalist. I even went to school for it, but soon discovered that I like making up people's stories moee than writing the truth of people in the world. Still... I did have fun when I did get to do it for real.

 1. Would you rather have a fun job that doesn't pay well or a boring job that does?

Seeing as how I actively have an exhausting, demanding and super fun job that doesn't pay well, I'd have to say, it's still better than office work. 😍😍

2. Would you sacrifice your morals for a job?

Um... probably not. I guess it depends if they're my morals or societies morals and if I also believe in them.

3. Would you ever take a job that requires you to be in costume?

In my experience and from those I've heard from, jobs that require a costume aren't jobs where the employer respects their staff and the costumes are not user-friendly to say the least. So, proudly not.

4. What is your fantasy job?

Successful author who sells so many books from their cabin in the mountains that they don't have to do any of their own PR. Hey, it's a fantasy, yes?

5. Would you like fries with that?

I've joined the Keto Cult so GOOOOOOOD GOD YES!! PLEASE! ALL THE FRIES!!

Challenge #11

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme.
First of all, I'm skipping 10 on purpose. I'm not in the right headspace right now for this one.

So, on to tropes and themes!

Found Families Are The Best Families )
And really, I think the thing I seek out in fiction is the same thing I look for in fandom spaces, people who ~get~ me, who accept me as I am, who share my weird quirks and obsessions and my secrets. ❤️❤️

So, what's your favorite books/ shows/ movies that feature Found Families? Here are some of mine:

One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston
The Last Binding Series by Freya Marske
Legends and Lattes, and Bookshops and Bonedust by Travis Baldtree
Pretty Much Anything by TJ Klune (seriously, there's a reason I'm obsessed!)

Challenge 9: Create a Fanwork

Okay, I need your help. I need you to drop me a prompt, a song lyric, a fandom (and pairing if you'd like) and I'll try and create something.

I have something I'm working on, but that got bigger than I had intended and might take a while, and I'd like to work on something I can share sooner. So really, anything.

These are the fandoms I've written in before, so any of those (though I'm pretty done with Harry Potter right now, so not that one please).

And this tag will give you an idea of what I've been consuming (and obsessed with lately. (Though, it's a lot, so you can just ask me too if that works for you).

AND HOLY FUCK,  I JUST ACCIDENTALLY POSTED THIS ON THE CHALLENGE COMMUNITY AND NOW I WANT TO SHRIVEL UP AND DISAPPEAR.  *awkward*

Challenge 8: In your own space, write a promo, manifesto or primer for a beloved character, relationship or fandom.

It's like joining a cult. A gay werewolf cult.  )

Ox is just too precious for this world. Your heart will break for him. You will want only good things to happen to him, want only people who see his worth. You will fall in love with a rough and tumble garage mechanic who takes him under his wing and protects him and his mother. You will marvel at the little boy who finds him on the side of the road and introduces him to an extraordinary life that he could have never imagined.

You will meet a family that loves with every thing they are and you will grieve with them as they struggle with loss and a need for vengeance.

I want to convince you all to read Green Creek, but I also don't want to give away any of the reasons why because I don't want to take away from the discovery of it. But, here, I found this and I think it does a good job of explaining a lot of the reasons it's a Must Read without giving too much away.

Just in case I'm crazy enough to take this on.

I was made aware of this by someone at FSC, but the community itself ( [livejournal.com profile] 100fandoms )looks pretty dead--no posts since 2012--but that's okay, we can have our own fun.

Hmmmm...

Lets see. What do I usually wish for? I can't even remember anymore. Oh yeah...

Artists and Writers: Anything you want to create, either remixing or illustrating something that I've written in the past, or maybe something from the fandom of any of this year's 5 star reads?

Graphics and/or Coding Gurus: I neeeeeeed help! I did one of those reading bingo things--first one I've ever finished and I'm ridiculous pleased with myself--and I'd like to make it pretty, or have links or... IDK, be able to make it mine in someway, ya know? So I need help, or it if is easier to just do it than explain it, then that instead. *looks sheepish*

Readers and Reccers: Sell me on your favorite book from this year!

And wow. That's it. Oh yeah, if you have asked for anything on your Wishlist that you think might be in my wheel house to provide--as a writer, reader or squee-er, do me a solid and link it here, yeah? Cool.

Challenge #6: Share a piece of canon...

I feel this is a bit of a cheat, but that's only because I had planned for a much more eleborate thing that needed a lot more set up and explanation and then it was all just  too much, and I felt like it might be spoilery and also maybe not that interesting to people who aren't me (which isn't usually something that bothers me--HAHA--but combine that with the time needed, and yeah...)

Challenge #5 Talk about what has improved in your life thanks to fandom.

You know what? Let's do a photo representation of just how, this summer, fandom improved my life. I wouldn't have either of these adventures without fandom. True story.

The first adventure was my reward for surviving 50+ years, hiking 50ish trails and getting my Bachelors in Early Childhood Education AND meeting [personal profile] redsnake05  all those years ago in a Ron Weasley Writing Community ❤️❤️

Challenge Four: Goals

This one was weirdly hard. For the last, oh, IDK, 5 years, I've had a lot of pretty monumental goals--lose weight, get in shape, get a degree, get a better job, travel.

But, last year, I sort of... well, I sort of did all those things. Or, I've been steadily accomplishing those goals to the best of my abilities and it finally all just sort of... happened. So, now what?

I mean, health is always something I'm going to have to work towards, but that's not a fun goal anymore, ya know? Maintaining health isn't as exciting as getting there to start with, and I want exciting goals.

So, until I can think of exciting goals, I'm going to go back to the basics of my Fandom Snowflake Challenge Goals. These are the ones I used to always make for myself to various degrees of success.

2025 Fandom Goals
1. Read More Fic
2. Write More Fic
3. Be Awesome!
