Title: Fleurs du Mal

Fandom: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
Pairing/Characters: Kimberly/Tommy
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4,466
Summary: Shortly after breaking up with Tommy, Kimberly comes down with a strange illness.

Hanahaki + Kim/Tommy post breakup is such a great combo and I loved the way it was handled.

Title: and swear, a taste of sweetness to soothe your soul
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] forsworn
Fandom: The Princess Diaries (Movies)
Pairing/Characters: Mia/Nicholas
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 3863
Summary: Mia's been working too hard, but she's determined to enjoy her day off with Nicholas - and even if her exhausted body lets her down, Nicholas and his gourmet cooking skills can still lift her spirits.

This was so soft and sweet. I love Nicholas taking care of Mia and the banter/dynamic was perfect. :D

[community profile] sunshine_revival posted up their fourth topic, even as the heat continues to hammer the Northern Hemisphere, along with humidity, and many of us hide in our climate controlled buildings against it.

We’re heading towards the middle of July, and I hope the weather is treating you kindly this summer, no matter where you are. Any fun plans so far? I’ve spent this week on the mountain, reconnecting with family and staying in a pretty cool house. And talking about houses…

Challenge #4:

Fun House
Journaling: What is making you smile these days? Create a top 10 list of anything you want to talk about.

Creative: Write from the perspective of a house or other location.
What makes you happy? )

More laughs and happiness later!

Good thing: after starting several years ago, I finally got around to cataloguing more of my books!

A thing: I am not done the books in my bedroom and I’m already over 400. (And this is after I culled/donated a bunch of sff mass-market paperbacks a few years ago, mostly ones we’d gotten from an emptying-nester.) Some of these catalogued books are “family” books and not strictly mine but…most of them are mine.

Another thing: this was motivated by needing to double-fill shelves, so I figured I’d catalogue while reorganizing. And this way it matters less if I can see all the spines…I hope?

seleneheart: a watermelon showing a bite out of it (Bite into summer)

Journaling prompt: What are your favorite summer-associated foods?
Creative prompt: Draw art of or make graphics of summer foods, or post your favorite summer recipes.

Watermelon Feta Salad
  1. Chop chunks of watermelon into bite-sized pieces, either into a serving bowl or your own bowl.

  2. Add crumbled feta to taste.

  3. Crack black pepper to taste over the whole thing

That's it! Flavors that shouldn't go together but absolutely do. Couldn't be more simple!

Whew! I’ll be making my Guest of Honor run at Readercon this coming weekend in Burlington, MA! It’s me and P. Djeli Clark in the GoH seats, with legions of super-smart sf/f writers and editors on the program, including Max Gladstone, Rob Cameron, Catherine Lundoff, John Chu, Laura Antoniou, Erin Roberts, Sarah Pinsker, Shariann Lewitt and many many more.

As expected, my schedule will be PACKED. Of note: I added a second autographing slot because of concerns that the first one happens soooo early. I will not have a table selling books: you can get them in the bookshop from Sally at Larry Smith Booksellers and some will also be on the Broad Universe table.

And yes, there will be some copies of the new shiny beautiful Magic University Collectors Edition hardcover. (And if you ordered a copy via Kickstarter, check your email for an update about picking up the book in person if you want to! Or just come to a party!)

[personal profile] duckprintspress's Pride Bundle 2025: General Imprint Short Stories (not available any more, but most of these stories can be found on DPP's Patreon) was absolutely delightful!

DPP is an indie press publishing diverse original works by fanwork creators, so it's not surprising that I vibed so much with these stories. Most of them are speculative.

There's non-binary rep (they/them, neo-pronouns, pronoun combinations or no pronouns), f/f and m/m.

Hello on Monday! How's the day going so far for fic? (If you haven't gotten started on your day as yet, how did yesterday go for writing fic?)

    - Excellent!
    - Terrible
    - Somewhere in between
    - Nothing doing

How much time have you spent on writing fic today, roughly?

    - None
    - 30 minutes or less
    - 30-60 minutes
    - 60-90 minutes
    - More than 90 minutes

In five words or less, how do you feel about that?

I just saw this show mentioned and the poster alone reminded me of another show I'd watched so I checked out the summary on IMDb. Are they just doing a remake of The Pretender, or what?

It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished!

Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Go!

I left for mom’s a little before 10am; but before I left I did a load of laundry (Pip’s uniforms; washed, dried and hung in the closet), hand-washed dishes, cut up chicken for the dogs’ meals, and scooped kitty litter.

I stayed until my new usual time of 3pm and stopped at Stewart's on the way home. I didn’t have to make supper because, again, Pip didn’t want anything hot, so he had leftover steak, cold. I hand-washed more dishes and showered.

I watched the current ep of Countdown, read more in Amelia Peabody, and started a different cozy on my Kindle app.

Temps started out at 70.0(F) and reached 93. It was hot. Thankfully I didn’t have to deal with it because I was inside at mom’s the hottest part of the day, until I got home.

Mom Update:

I left for mom’s a little early to help her stir up cookies for my brother’s birthday because I didn’t think she could do it on her own. Spoiler alert: she did it on her own. more )

Writerly Ways

I am sad. This is the second time in 6 weeks when I've run into a changing deadline from a publisher. I had finished a story I was pretty happy with. The pay for this open call was high. I KNOW the deadline because I checked it repeatedly. Got the beta edits back, checked to triple check the word count...and the date is changed. It's frustrating. It feels like a waste of everyone's time. Yes, I can probably find another open call this will fit eventually but this bullshit of closing early and changing deadlines sucks.

I'm trying to see it from their point of view. Maybe they have SO many submissions they can't handle it and close early. Still, I can't be checking every day to places I plan to submit to see if this is going on. Most of these publishers don't have blogs. Maybe they tell duotrope or another service something they're making a change but I don't know. You can't watch them all.

How do you all keep track of deadlines/places you're interested in?

Not the writerly ways i planned to give but this is what you're getting

Played two games on Sunday. Think I played 2 games a couple of rounds ago, too.

On the whole, the body is hurting quite a bit more than it was last time. But I've been having a few aches and pains.

Good feeling: I scored a goal - a beautiful pass from the wing straight into the middle of the circle, and I (and a defender whose stick clashed with mine) reangled it into the goal behind the keeper.

Bad feeling: all the twingy, twitchy hip and leg aches for which I am going to see a physio this morning.

Apparently, Team 1 is down to 13 players (there's 11 on the field) and they were going to move some of T2 up (myself and my friend J, who came and played for the club last year because I was here and her team was being relegated to a competition in the southwest; she still plays with them for the masters/veterans competition) but we've got about three injuries ongoing on the team - including one fractured foot and one pregnancy, who is taking it fairly easy.

Yesterday, we were missing one of our 'young runners', and the other had period cramps really bad. Both inners (women about my age, so perimenopausal) were nursing injuries, and our pregnancy is on the wing. Doing well, but...yeah. She probably won't be running much longer...

Our forward line is simply not able to get the ball up there with any kind of strength, so we're losing 3-0, but we're doing a really good job at playing. I know that doesn't sound like we are with 3-0 losses, but truly told, we're playing amazing. Passing, calling, talking, we just can't get it into the circle and into the goal.

Anyway, we're improving and we're having fun. Even the not-so-nice team was okay to play yesterday.

Back to Team 1, they're probably going to try to get myself and J qualified for the team in the finals series. Which...eek. That means at least another 2 weekends with 2 games for me. Which...I can maybe do if I keep my fitness up? Oof.

But I may reach my holidays and be like "here is a pool and a nice hotel in Sinagapore and I AIN'T MOVING A MUSCLE"...

Challenge #4

Fun House
Journaling: What is making you smile these days? Create a top 10 list of anything you want to talk about.
Creative: Write from the perspective of a house or other location.

I thought I would do top ten Fanlore Featured Articles.  So, if you don't know, the Fanlore editors are constantly nominating and voting on the Featured Article, if it gets enough "yes" votes then it is featured on the Main Page of Fanlore (similar to Wikipedia).  This has been going on since 2017, so there been quite a lot of them.  This is very much biased and based on vibes and the ones I like best, but all featured articles are interesting to some degree.

1. Sherlock Holmes
2. Last Outpost Of All That Is
3. goodbye, my brothers...
4. Endverse
5. Tarsus IV
6. Sex Pollen
7. Star Trek: Tik Tok
8. Iolaus
9. Podfic Cover Art
10. Folgers "Home for the Holidays" Commercial

It was harder to choose than I thought!  There are so many good articles that have been featured over the years!

I won't be able to do the creative prompt today, my brain just won't let me write lately.  My poor Fandom Trumps Hate recipient is still waiting on their fic, although I have told them they probably won't get it till autumn now.  I'm like "Brain, please write!" and my brain is like "No! No write, only stress about buying a house and moving!"  Sigh.
