DAY 9:

Send feedback to two fannish people — they can be anyone you want: just let someone know you appreciate their work.

I did this yesterday when reveals went up at both [livejournal.com profile] hoggywartyxmas and [insanejournal.com profile] daily_deviant's Kinky Kristmas, but since I'm also honored enough to have all those mods here as friends, who might read this while scrolling on their much deserved break from responsibility, I want to get all sappy and whatnot. Ready?

Let Me Count the Ways )

I could go on and on about these guys, and so many other people who give so much to fandom, there's just SO MANY, and that's a good thing. All ya'll are amazing! Seriously. Don't ever change.

Day 7

Create Something

Firstly, to fulfill that requirement in the allotted time of the challenge, here is what I created. This was for [personal profile] dancing_serpent's Day 6 Wishlist. It's Criminal Minds, which is something I love a lot, and yet, have never written for. I actually don't know how much I could really write for the fandom, as last night, getting into this psycho's head was way too much fun and entirely too easy. :((

Seared with Scars (1005 words) by tjs_whatnot

Two sides of the same coin...

Secondly, all my holiday fics have now been revealed so I can post them here. Even though I don't usually put this stuff in a public post, fuck it, why not?

Now, ONTO [community profile] chocolateboxcomm!!!

And also hopefully filling other wishes for Snowflakers!

Day 5

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

Okay, this is going to get long and probably take me forever, because I don't make things easy for myself and bookmark hardly ever but here goes.

Firstly, I've been incredibly remiss to gush publicly with the bounty that has been my fest season. I know recs for gift fic are taken with a grain of salt, I mean, how could I not love something written for me specifically, right? But firstly, recs are always subjective and secondly, a fic shouldn't be punished just because it was written for me, yes?

Fics written for me, but you'll enjoy too... probably: )

Non-Gift fic From HP Fests: )

And finally, two random fics from the 1st day of the Snowflake Challenge: )

See? I told you that was going to be ridiculously long. But you know what I always say: Go Big or Go Home. (Actually never said that before in my life.) ♥

YAY! It's Chocolate Box time again! I am sooo jazzed about this! I'm going to try and keep this as short as I can, because really, for all of these? I just want MORE story. I mean, I'll give you precise prompts if I think of one, but mostly it will just be a little hint to get you in the right direction. ;)

General, my tastes are simple, yet varied enough that there's really no way that you could disappoint me. For example: I am as pumped for angsty and cracktastic, I love canon compliance and AUs.

Tropes and whatnot that I'm a sucker for:

Obviously (based on what I've requested and who I've requested) I like found families, and teams coming together for a common goal. I like hurt/comfort, epistolary, location as character, secondary characters running the show, experimental story telling style (i.e. poetry, 2nd person POV, drabble sets) GO CRAZY!

Request 1: Agent Carter

Ana Jarvis/Edwin Jarvis
Peggy Carter & Howard Stark
Peggy Carter & Edwin Jarvis
Peggy Carter & Ana Jarvis
Peggy Carter & Ana Jarvis & Edwin Jarvis

Ahhh, this show is so great and kick-ass and I love it, but for this, I sort of want wit and hi-jinks, people who are really good at most things to be really bad (or at the least, in need of help) in others. So maybe Peggy needs Jarvis to teach her to dance and in turn, he wants her to teach him how to do one of the many things Peggy excels at-- and Ana and or Howard watches from the sidelines and offer pointers/criticisms. Or Howard needs a favor and Peggy has some demands of her own. Really anything with any of these characters would be awesome, though I'd really only like romance with Ana and Edwin, maybe something domestic and homey in the midst of chaos, or a bit of backstory about how they fell in love.

Request 2 Doctor Who

Eleventh Doctor/River Song
Amy Pond/Rory Williams & River Song
Amy Pond/Rory Williams
Twelfth Doctor/River Song
Jack Harkness/River Song
River Song & Rory Williams
Amy Pond & River Song
Eleventh Doctor & Amy Pond & Rory Williams
Donna Noble & River Song
Twelfth Doctor & Jack Harkness & Missy
Eleventh Doctor & Tenth Doctor

Mostly I'm in Doctor Who for the 11 (or as I call him Doctor Squishy-Face) ♥ I'd love either a missing scene or pre-canon/post canon... like maybe about Amy and Rory winding up together in NYC where they find a little girl who is lost and alone and remembers very little about herself except that once, she had wanted to be an astronaut. Or more bits of "Pond Life" or a page from River and The Doctor's diary. For the Doctor/River (while I ship the fuck out of 11/River) I also wouldn't mind some 12/River, or maybe she compares and contrasts all the Doctors she knows. The Jack/River is just because two people that sexually charged with vortex manipulators are bound to have hooked up at least once, am I right? And how weird would the shenanigans with 12, Jack and Missy be? I have no idea what I want with that, I just really want it. ;)

Request 3 Hart of Dixie

Zoe Hart/Wade Kinsella
Earl Kinsella & Wade Kinsella
Lavon Hayes & Wade Kinsella
Lavon Hayes/Annabeth Nass
Lavon Hayes & Zoe Hart
Lemon Breeland & Wade Kinsella
Wade Kinsella & George Tucker

Bored one long weekend and trolling along Netflix looking for something new and I took a chance on this show. And at the end of the weekend, I was almost at the end of the show. I'm just SUCH a sucker for this sort of story. The fish-out-of-water stories, the quirky town folk stories. Any missing scene would be good, any of the ones without Zoe in them would be awesome to have some pre-canon. For the romance ones, I love Lavon/Annabeth and was really sad about them not winding up together. They were so cute! I also like Wade/Zoe, but would prefer a story of them getting together in all it's messy glory rather than them being happily ever after together.

Request 4 MASH
ANY

I don't even remember what characters and relationships were up for consideration in this fandom, but since I love EVERY character (to various degrees) and would LOVE anything with any relationship, I just put "Any." Seriously, go crazy! Specifically? I love Hawkeye being put in his place and being contrite about it. I like missing scenes as well as post season. This is a great fandom to explore the epistolary style. I LOVED the letters home motif that this show did so well. Maybe once they get home, one of them misses the confessional that a letter sent far off to someone who isn't in their lives compels and starts a penpal relationship? What would they say in a letter that they'd never say in person?

Request 5 Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

Chirrut Îmwe/Baze Malbus & Bodhi Rook & Cassian Andor & Jyn Erso & K-2SO
Galen Erso & Bodhi Rook
Chirrut Îmwe & Baze Malbus & Jyn Erso
Chirrut Îmwe & any Jedi
Cassian Andor & Rebel soldiers
Cassian Andor & Jyn Erso & K-2SO
Cassian Andor & his parents
Bodhi Rook & Baze Malbus & Cassian Andor & Chirrut Îmwe & Jyn Erso & K-2SO
Jyn Erso & K-2SO
Cassian Andor & K-2SO

As you can tell with this (and many other of my requests), I'm all about the gen right now. Not that there can't be romantic overtones, but just that I want the relationship explored without the goal of sexy-times being in play. For this one, (and SPOILERS if you haven't seen the movie, look away!) I'd like it to take place either in canon (a missing scene, maybe a character study in relation to the other) or pre-canon. I don't really want any of them to miraculous survive. I know, how sad is that? But I'm not ready to tinker with that particular problem right now. What I'd really like from any Cassian based story is backstory. What exactly did he endure? Who did he lose? Backstory for Chirrut and Baze would be ace too!

Request 6 Star Wars Original Trilogy

Leia Organa/Han Solo
Lando Calrissian & Han Solo
Han Solo/Leia Organa & Luke Skywalker

ANYTHING! WRITE ME ANYTHING FOR THESE PEOPLE AND I WILL BE HAPPY! And this one, if you're so inclined, can get as smexy as you want between Leia and Han. Show me some sweet, sweet love...or some snarky, tumultuous love. Or maybe how Han and Leia start a family and make sure Luke is involve in it. Even bits of Ben's inclusion? Sure, go for it! For the Lando and Han, maybe some backstory? A how-they-met story, or one of their dealings with each other? And by all means, feel free to um... fuse those last two fandoms together to your heart's content. Shhhh, I won't tell. ♥

Basically though, have fun. Don't stress about the details. It's all good.

And if you'd like a second opinion about my likes and whatnots, [personal profile] redsnake05 is your go-to. Not only do they know me really well, they also know how to translate my babble into normal-person speak. ;)
tjs_whatnot: (txt--want to lick your mind)
What have I been doing to get over my post-election funk? Reading of course. I had gone to my comfort-read file (just kidding, I don't have one of those, because that's what smart, well put together people have. All I have are vague recollections of fics that made me happy and other smart, well put together people's rec lists). But then [livejournal.com profile] interhouse_fest began posting and since I try really hard to participate as much as I can in fests I write for, I started reading.

There are some delightful things over there getting little to no love and so I thought, if people are like me and leery about pairings and stories from unknown writers and are looking for someone to bite the bullet for them first and report back whether it is worth their time, I would take it upon myself to be that person. So here I am, reporting back with the ones I've read so far that I think a lot more people would enjoy. I'm about a week in a half behind, so there are others that I'll have to report back on later (and if you have read anything from there in that time that are good, please let me know, cool?)

The Road to Nowhere (Fred/Pansy) 12.6k, R, War A/U.
A Beautiful Kind of Strange (Ron/Luna) 4.5k, NC-17
Crashing Into Place (George/Luna) 5.8k, R
In the Public Interest (Pansy/Neville) 3.3K, NC-17
Snakes and Ladders (Astoria/Ginny) 4.1k, NC-17
The Strange Case of the Missing Twins, the Black Kneazle, and the Sepia Photograph (Padma and Pavarti and a whole slew of secondary characters) 8k, PG-13

And that's it for now. I'll try to catch up with both this fest (and my Nano) by the end of the holiday weekend. ♥♥

Day 4

In your own space, create a fanwork. Make a drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. Arts and crafts. Draft a critical essay about a particular media. Put together a picspam or a fanmix. Write a review of a Broadway show, a movie, a concert, a poetry reading, a museum trip, a you-should-be-listening-to-this-band essay. Compose some limericks, haikus, free-form poetry, 5-word stories. Document a particular bit of real person canon. Take some pictures. Draw a stick-figure comic. Create something.

I might come back and create something later. All those above suggestions sound fun and doable... but not right now. Right now I'm going to spend this time and space to pay tribute to other people's creations.

There are things that happen every year that I forget about until they are upon us and then I scramble to make them work. Things like Fandom Snowflake Challenge and Rectober, that I love the idea of and try and participate, but don't get done half the things I wanted.

Then there are things that have become habit and have helped me mark time in fandom for so long that I start gearing up for months (and sometimes up to almost a year before) like Yuletide.

This year is no different. It is October 2nd and I am just now reminded that Rectober is a thing that exists in the world and that it is an awesome thing that I totally want to do.

This time, unlike other times, I actually have the time and ability to really do it right. I even have built in things happening that will help me organize themes.

Week One: Random Fandom

As Yuletide noms are upon us and I am once again getting that Yuletide frenzy that washes over me from the moment noms open, I will devote the first weeks recs to stories that were written for the fest. I have a lot of things bookmarked to read from the years I've participated that I will devour this week. Also, I'll probably rec things that I already have, if there things that even now I go back and revisit. Chances are the people who visit my journal now aren't the same that were here last time. The ones who are will forgive me this, yes?

Week Two: White Collar

Columbus Day weekend I will be at the White Collar Meet Up here in the D.C. area hanging out with other fans, writers and artists and we will be writing and squeeing like mad, and I will be reading ALL THE FIC! I'm super excited about this! I will be back at the end of the week with recs of the best of what I read.

Week Three: Harry Potter

By the end of the month I will be (hopefully) done with my HoggyWarty Thinger Bobber fest fic and will be ready to read all the HP fics I've missed, or (lets be honest) go back and re-read some of my very favorites. And so I will be back here giving you a (hopefully) huge list of HP stories of many pairings and genres that you should probably just take my word for and read. ♥

Week Four: MishMash

Because, lets be honest, the chances that I make it to the fourth week are extremely slim, but on the occasion that I do, I'll keep it open to what I rec... what I read and fall in love with. Maybe some Sherlock, maybe some Doctor Who... who knows.

This shall be fun, yes?

Who else is doing this? Anyone?

Recs!

Man, it's been a looooong time since I've done this!

But, it's also been a long time since I've been in a fest, and I like to read stories in fests that I've participated in. Of course though, I do have delicate sensibilities about some things, but I do like to push some other limits.

So, the fest is [livejournal.com profile] hp_crossgenfest and it's a bit of a strange one, ngl... or maybe it's just an indication of where the fandom is right now. It is nice to see Harry get so very much love though. I've never seen a fest filled with multi-generational pairings that had Harry in such the epicenter. There was Harry with pretty much all of his children in some way or the other, if that's your thing. There's Harry with Voldemort, which I haven't gathered the nerve to read yet. Then there were these ones that I did gather enough nerve for. I'm usually really delicate about Harry pairings and all of these are pairings that I would have never considered reading before, but all of them, I'm glad I took the risk and encourage you to as well.

Recs Under Here )

That's it for now. The fest runs for a little longer and I've just discovered that there is now another Remus story! This one with Ron--HOLY SHIT! And also, holy shit, turns out, this is the first story in the entire run of this fest to include Ron. WHATTTTT?!?!?!?!

Gotta go!

Please do check out these stories though! And if you love them, love the author who wrote them. ♥
