DAY 9:

Send feedback to two fannish people — they can be anyone you want: just let someone know you appreciate their work.

I did this yesterday when reveals went up at both [livejournal.com profile] hoggywartyxmas and [insanejournal.com profile] daily_deviant's Kinky Kristmas, but since I'm also honored enough to have all those mods here as friends, who might read this while scrolling on their much deserved break from responsibility, I want to get all sappy and whatnot. Ready?

Let Me Count the Ways )

I could go on and on about these guys, and so many other people who give so much to fandom, there's just SO MANY, and that's a good thing. All ya'll are amazing! Seriously. Don't ever change.

Now tell me, what's your favorite things about you?

Day 06

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

UGH. Okay, yeah, lets do this:

1) To fill many other people's request, I have made a transformative works blanket statement on all my journals and ao3, so for my wish, I'd like to say: Go, Transform My Works. ♥

2) Um... I swear I had things, I did. But, like I am when friends and family ask what I want for Christmas; no matter how many things I have on my list, the minute I'm asked, I blank. :( I'd say graphics (icons, headers, wallpaper) but I don't know that I'm excited enough about anything right now to know what to ask. How sad is that?

3) Stranger Things...things? Recs mostly. Fic, vids, meta...anything. I just watched the entire series over the Thanksgiving holiday and am about to start watching it again and I'd like to have fic to read, art to look at (I've loved all I've seen so far) or vids to watch. I'd also like people to talk to about it (just as soon as all my thoughts aren't OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG WHAT IS HAPPENING!?!?!) And believe me, self-reccing is totally accepted (and encouraged!)

*I know I cheated on that one where I didn't ask for anything. :( Maybe I was asking for inspiration... what are you passionate about? Convince me... ♥

Day 5

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

Okay, this is going to get long and probably take me forever, because I don't make things easy for myself and bookmark hardly ever but here goes.

Firstly, I've been incredibly remiss to gush publicly with the bounty that has been my fest season. I know recs for gift fic are taken with a grain of salt, I mean, how could I not love something written for me specifically, right? But firstly, recs are always subjective and secondly, a fic shouldn't be punished just because it was written for me, yes?

Fics written for me, but you'll enjoy too... probably: )

Non-Gift fic From HP Fests: )

And finally, two random fics from the 1st day of the Snowflake Challenge: )

See? I told you that was going to be ridiculously long. But you know what I always say: Go Big or Go Home. (Actually never said that before in my life.) ♥

Day 03

Set some goals for the coming year.

The great thing about modding at [community profile] snowflake_challenge is that you get to read--and be inspired--by all the great participants. The hard part, is that sometimes you don't have enough time to reflect as much as you'd like on things for yourself. But, that's okay, after the opus that was Day 2's post, I sort of want to go minimalist here. So maybe I'll be back with lists and addendums and whatnot, but for now, I'm taking a page (or the actual literal post of a participant whose goals were just so fuckin' precise and perfect). [personal profile] petra, you are a goddess--as is, of course, Carrie Fisher. ♥

Honor Carrie Fisher by:
- normalizing mental illness and its treatment
- taking life a little less seriously
- destroying a fascist regime, or at least working very hard to contain its damage

For me:
- Write something
- Submit something
- Keep loving my job
- Keep loving my friends
- Keep loving myself

Day 2

In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I feel like I've already covered so many things that changed my life. So I went looking to see so I wouldn't repeat myself, and I was right, SO MANY! I just really get excited about things, okay? ♥

Day 14

In your own space, share your love for something fannish: a trope, cliché, kink, motif, theme, format, or fandom.

So many choices. But, let's talk about fanvids.

Day 15

In your own space, talk about what you're taking away from this challenge. Did you learn something? Did you interact with new people? Or did you try out different fandoms or formats or relationships? What's changed between Day 1 and Day 15 of this challenge?

It's said, that it takes 3 weeks to turn a behavior into a habit, so this was a great start to make a few things habits. The habit to be here and participate in fandom in many different ways, the habit to think about things in new ways, to reach out to new people and the habit to not take things to overly serious all the time. To take time to concentrate on the positive, to tell people that you love them while you still can and to cherish the little things.

I LOVE YOU GUYS SOOOO MUCH!

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner

Day 12

What makes you fannish? And by that we mean, what is it about a tv show/movie/book/band/podcast/etc that takes you from, "Yeah, I like that," to "I need MOAR!!!" Is it a character? A plotline? The pretty? Subtext that’s just screaming to be acknowledged?

For me, it has always been, and always will be, about character. Back in school, character driven fiction was called "Literary Fiction" and that's what I read, what I wrote. It was much later--something about a boy wizard and the magical world he lived in--where I discovered that character driven fiction was also called "fantasy" and "sci-fi." That pretty much all genres had character driven stories, whether they had to build the world around them or not.

But, character is so all-encompassing. There are certain kinds of characters (and group of characters) that do it for me. Broken. Lost. Desperate.

While signing up for the ChocolateBox fest, and writing up all the many, many fandoms I requested (seriously, I was super greedy), I realized what all my fandoms have in common. Found families. I am a OMG!Sucker for people looking for (and finding) family, a place to belong, a place to call home, people to connect with and become important to and for.

Day 11

In your own space, make a list of at least 3 things that you like about yourself.

I remember a few years ago when I started doing this challenge and how hard these particular ones were to do, the reccing yourself, asking for things and singing your own praises. I don't know if I just took it all more seriously all those years ago, or if I've gotten better (with practice) at this whole "I Rock!" thing. ♥

1.) I am a good friend. I like that my friends know that I'm there for them, no matter what, and while I don't always know what to say, and I'm pretty much consistently socially awkward, I still drop what I'm doing and put in the effort.
2.) I have a good sense of humor. If you're into sarcasm that is. Some people aren't. I don't get those people. Those people really don't get me. But other than them, I'm fuckin' hilarious. ♥
3.) I am a good writer and strive everyday (mostly) to be better. I love that I can make people cry, laugh, think. I like that I can be much more serious and contemplative in fiction than I am in life. I love that I have a imagination and friends who will help me with the tricky comma placement bits. ;)

See. Easy-peasy.

Day 10
In your own space, post a rec for fannish and/or creative resources and spaces. Tell us where you go to dig up canon facts for your fandom, or where you get all the juicy details about your favorite ship. Where do you like to hang out and squee like a squeeing thing?

Honestly, when I'm looking for resources and creative spaces, I come here, to you all. ♥ When I need a canon fact and I can't remember the exact chapter/episode, I come here, I come to you. Or Google. Or Wikipedia.

To squee and whatnot, I also like to come here, but when I need a quick fix, I hit up Facebook or Twitter--where I have enough of you and other geeky types who get me and my level of... ah... ~enthusiasm~ for things. When I discover a new obsession and don't know where to go with my feels, I go to Tumblr. As a place to connect with other fans, Tumblr blows. But as a place to find an oddly large number of people already geekin' about something you've just discovered and already has gif sets and meta all around it, Tumblr is the place to go.

Even though my fannishness is spread out all over these days, my first instinct is to come here and squee with you. ♥

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner

Day 7

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon and explain why you love it so much.

I love the idea of this challenge, you know how I love to wax poetic about things I love. I am finding it hard, however, to narrow it down. And I could just go on and on about everything. But, well, I got to catch up and I got to do a million other things, and also, I'd like to do this sort of right.

I've already done this for White Collar, and I've already gotten ridiculous about Squishy-Face's era of Doctor Who, and in my RL that I can't link to on this public accessed post, written about my life long love of Han Solo and just reviewed the newest movie on my website--which again, can't link to on this post.

So, I thought I'd take this time and space to talk about a piece of canon that broke my heart, haunted me for decades and that I have just, a few weeks ago, worked up the nerve to watch again for the first time since it aired many, many years ago.

M*A*S*H: Goodbye, Farewell and Amen )

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner

In your own space, create your own challenge. What’s something you want to see more people doing in fandom? Is there something you’ve tried that you think other people would enjoy if they gave it a go? Dare your friends to try it out, and have fun with it.

I wasn't going to do this one. The first thing that came to my mind was that I'd like to challenge myself to actually fuckin' be here. But, that seems sort of a intangible thing that I'm either here for or I'm not. But, that's not what they're asking here for anyway. They want a challenge, like a fandom thing.

Hmmmm.

Here's my thing. I have a few ideas. But I don't want to start a thing that goes no where. And I'm not... somehow I'm not the sort of person that gets people rallied around things. So, I guess I'll just throw this challenge out there and see if I get any interest in it. If I do, then I'll put the work in and I will rock the fuck out of it.

Geeky Gift Exchange

I've been involved in a few through the years. A group from a Harry Potter conference who a few times through the year, holds one, a friend here on LJ held a Snape/Sherlock one for a few years that was fun. What usually happens, everyone who signs up, answers a questionnaire about fandoms, likes and dislikes and whatnot and then are matched with someone based on that and you are required to craft (or purchase--or most cases, I bit of both) something for the other person and send it to them. Kind of like a Fandom Secret Santa thing.

I like fic exchanges, I do, but it's also fun to do arts and crafts and to support Fandom crafters on Etsy and whatnot. Plus, I love getting mail.

If that doesn't work, maybe I could challenge myself to send random postcards to any flister who is trusting enough to give me an address. I like to send mail, and I have just discovered while cleaning out my office, that I have a shit ton of postcards and whatnot.

So, that's Day 6 done. Now I do the 7th by the end of the day and I'm totes caught up. I didn't post about the 5th day--leaving feedback--but it's something that I do almost religiously. I don't understand writers and artists who don't. I really don't. I'm not being snotty about it, I just know what makes me happy and try and do likewise to people who give of themselves for my enjoyment and whatnot. It's a karma thing.

Day 4

In your own space, create a fanwork. Make a drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. Arts and crafts. Draft a critical essay about a particular media. Put together a picspam or a fanmix. Write a review of a Broadway show, a movie, a concert, a poetry reading, a museum trip, a you-should-be-listening-to-this-band essay. Compose some limericks, haikus, free-form poetry, 5-word stories. Document a particular bit of real person canon. Take some pictures. Draw a stick-figure comic. Create something.

I might come back and create something later. All those above suggestions sound fun and doable... but not right now. Right now I'm going to spend this time and space to pay tribute to other people's creations.

Day 03

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

This is perfect actually. I had a lot of different posts I wanted to make today: A rec list, a post about the things I've recently written, and whatever the Snowflake challenge was today. So yay, two birds in one stone. The first two aren't the best I've ever written, but they are the most recent I've ever written (and I do like them a lot).

Blah, blah, here is where I proclaim that I have a hard time with this challenge...

But today, I have the entire day to write, so I'm going to go and try and fill a shit ton of requests myself and am hoping karma (and you lovelies) will do the rest.

This is going to be pretty heavy on the Star Wars: The Force Awakens side, so I'm going to put it under a cut and put a bit of a scroll down for those not wanting to be spoiled (is there people who haven't seen it who still worry about spoilers? There must be...) Anyway...

In your own space, talk about why you are doing the Fandom Snowflake Challenge? What drew you to it as a participant? What do you hope to accomplish by doing these challenges? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

A few things. First, I want something that requires me to be here everyday and since I sometimes struggle with having things to say that aren't boring (even to me), I need some direction from time to time. Secondly, I'm trying to bring more balance to my life and fandom and the people I've met through it/them are important to me and I need to make myself more available to it/them.

Day Six

In your own space, create a fanwork. A drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. A picspam. Something.

I was sitting here whining that I didn't have time for this challenge. I had too many things already on my to-do list, so I couldn't possible stop all that and just ~create~ something, could I? No, no I couldn't.

But then I realized that one of the things on my list is a different sort of art form than I'm used to, but it's still something fannish I created. Believe me, I'm much more confident in sharing my writing craft than my arts and crafts.

But, I sort of like creating things. They never come out how I envision them, and that can be frustrating, but I like to think that with each attempt I get better. The only problem is that I rarely create just for fun, I create something because I've offered to do so in an exchange or to show some flist love, and so get really super frustrated when they don't turn out right.

Which is why no one who signed up for my holiday cookies actually got any. Sorry about that.

But, enough of that, on to the pictures:
